Optoma Handheld Projector

Optoma recently announced the world’s first handheld projector based on Texas Instruments’ DLP Pico chipset.

Ideal for video iPods, cameras or smartphones, the four-ounce Optoma Pico Projector is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand yet can splash a detailed image – such as videos or photos — on a nearby surface up to 100 times larger than the 1- to 3-inch screen on the source device.

Based on digital light processing (DLP) mechanics for exceptional contrast, this micro-portable projector also folds in light emitting diode (LED) technology for rich and colourful images.

The product will first be available in Europe and Asia in late 2008, with a worldwide launch to follow at some point in 2009. No price has been confirmed.

The DLP Pico chipset from Texas Instruments is an incredible breakthrough (see Engadget article for more).  Just as Webcams are now integrated with many laptop PCs, you can see that five or ten years down the road that such revolutionary technology could be integrated with laptops and later with PDA and other smartphone devices.
